What is a Community Plan?

A Community Plan is an all encompassing document and covers the topics that are of concern to YOUR community.

It outlines a profile of where you live, your community. It can include everything you have already prepared to date such as Village Design Statements and Community Histories. It is an analysis of the demographics of your community, the people, the businesses, local transport, open spaces anything that is of importance to YOU.

It is a community consultation taking in the views of as many people as possible from your Parish. It allows everyone who lives or works in the community to determine the future of their parish by saying which issues affect them and what they would like to see done about them in the future. It's the community's chance to have its say in its future.

The consultation will culminate in an Action Plan, a working document that turns what you need into what you have. Usually it looks ahead to around 5 years, and attempts to get your community from what it is today to what it wants to be tomorrow.

 Why should you do one?

Because:

  • It puts you in a much better position to influence local and national government

  • Its puts you in a much better position to attract funding for your projects

  • It gives your local council a mandate to work on your behalf

  • It informs your Unitary Authority about your views and opinions and what you want

  • It can put the heart back in your community by getting more people involved in local issues

  • It gives you a chance to influence your own destiny

Who does the Plan, how long does it take?

  • A Group is formed to guide and manage the process; this is normally between 8 and 12 people and should involve a cross section of your community. Although this Group has the backing of the Parish Council and should contain 1 or 2 Councillors it is independent of them and represents the community as a whole.

  • Volunteers from existing groups and all sections of the parish will help along the way, with people giving as much time as they can to assist the main guiding group in conducting the consultation and analysing the results.

  • I t normally takes between a year and 15 months to complete the Action Plan which is then adopted by the Parish Council. The actions can cover a number of areas and involve such people as the Parish Council itself, the Unitary Authority, local Groups BUT mainly the Community.
