Plans are under way to form a Youth Choir in Paulton
from Guy Edwards.......
In the wake of interest in choirs following Gareth Malone’s recent TV programmes, we are hoping to found a choir for young people ranging from school years 5 – 11, based in the village of Paulton.
The idea is to develop an enthusiastic, committed, able group of young singers, to perform a lively contemporary repertoire. This will encompass songs ranging from the musicals, to jazz, to pop music from the past three decades.
Our first performance will be at Paulton’s public celebration - Jubilee on the Park on Saturday 2nd June 2012. We will then look for further opportunities to perform locally.

18/1/12 A taste of local history.
Did you know?
Julia Hill (1795-1886)lived in Paulton all her life; she was the sister of Squire John Hill and together with her sister Elizabeth she ran the Women’s Club which provided money and goods such as blankets for the poor. In 1840’s the Hill family donated the major part of the money needed to build the Church of England School and later gave the land paid for it to be enlarged.
In 1843 Julia and Elizabeth gave over £100 for a house to be built for the schoolmaster on land in front of the vicarage. This is now the premises for Nature’s Vet.
The old Schoolhouse 2010

The family were generous benefactors to the church; in 1862 they made a major contribution to the cost of building the chancel and organ chamber and other improvements to the church.

Julia was concerned about the welfare of horses too and had a trough built at the top of Phillis Hill for them to stop for a drink after the long pull up the hill. The surrounds of this remain in the wall of Bloomfield Nursing Home. After her death the parish had a trough built on Paulto Hill which is dedicated to her memory. It is fed by the Paulto Spring.

BANES COUNCILLORS’ UPDATE :DECEMBER
YOUTH WORK
Thanks to a successful application for £5000 to the new Youth Enablement Fund by the Parish Council’s Young People’s Sub Committee ( consisting of Parish Council representatives, the police and ourselves) and a grant from the Parish Council budget we were able to advertise this month for two youth workers to take over on Monday nights in the Village Hall when the Youth Bus ceases to visit Paulton at the end of March. This is very encouraging and we look forward to their providing a positive programmefor young people in the village. The grant includes some money for purchasing equipment which the young people have asked for.
PAULTON IN BLOOM
A meeting this month saw this new venture get under way with an entry ( probably for Bath in Bloom, as the first step) being considered for the Spring. The competition isn’t only about flowers and hanging baskets – environmental matters ( including wild life sites), allotments and general tidiness of the village are all taken into account. Please get in touch if you would like to join our list of potential helpers.
LIBRARY RELOCATION
This is becoming a longer saga than we would like, with applications for funding from the Performance Reward Grant fund now being delayed until March. However other sources of funding are also being investigated and the £20,000 for setting up the Community Café is secure. The lease has now been agreed.
TRAFFIC STUDY
Both of us have been involved in this study which was presented as an exhibition in November. All comments have been noted (including those from Withy Mills residents) and will be considered when the Group (including parish Councillors and representatives of the Community Plan transport action group) meet in January.
We wish A Happy and Prosperous New Year for all residents of Paulton!
