On the 31/1/12 we published an article from B&NES regarding Dog exclusion zones. There have been very strong views expressed about these proposesals and we understand that B&NES is planning to issue new proposals later in the year.  For more information click here.

1/2/12

Apparantly, we should all pay particular attention to the weather on the 2nd of February as it is Candlemas day.  Folk lore tells us that bad weather on Candlemas day indicates a good Summer, whereas a bright, dry Candlemas is a sign of  miserable Summer weather.  Whatever the weather Candlemas marks the midpoint between the shortest day of the year and the Spring Equinox.  So time to be looking forward to getting out and about.

Have you looked at our Village Events lately.  Many groups seem to have been doing their annual planning.  Thank you for those who have been in touch with us.  If you have not contacted us, please do so.  This is YOUR PAULTON so help to keep the village alive and communicating.

Plans are under way to form a Youth Choir in Paulton

from Guy Edwards.......

In the wake of interest in choirs following Gareth Malone’s recent TV programmes, we are hoping to found a choir for young people ranging from school years 5 – 11, based in the village of Paulton.

The idea is to develop an enthusiastic, committed, able group of young singers, to perform a lively contemporary repertoire.  This will encompass songs ranging from the musicals, to jazz, to pop music from the past three decades.

Our first performance will be at Paulton’s public celebration - Jubilee on the Park on Saturday 2nd June 2012.  We will then look for further opportunities to perform locally.

 A taste of local history.

Did you know?

Julia Hill (1795-1886) lived in Paulton all her life; she was the sister of Squire John Hill and together with her sister Elizabeth she  ran the Women’s Club which provided money and goods such as blankets for the poor. In 1840’s the Hill family donated the major part of the money needed to build the Church of England School and later gave the land paid for it to be enlarged.

In 1843 Julia and Elizabeth gave over £100 for a house to be built for the schoolmaster on land in front of the vicarage. This is now the premises for Nature’s Vet.

 The old Schoolhouse 2010

The family were generous benefactors to the church; in 1862 they made a major contribution to the cost of building the chancel and organ chamber and other improvements to the church.

Julia was concerned about the welfare of horses too and had a trough built at the top of Phillis Hill for them to stop for a drink after the long pull up the hill. The surrounds of this remain in the wall of Bloomfield Nursing Home. After her death the parish had a trough built on Paulto Hill which is dedicated to her memory. It is fed by the Paulto Spring.
